Hi everyone,as April comes to an end,Friday is May 1st and the start of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and also Mother’s Day. Here’s an FYI:Did you know that there are Afro-Asian Amrericans,as well as Asian-Jamaicans.SIngers include:Anderson Paak, and lead musician Byron Lee of Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, and let’s not leave out Patricia Chin:the co-founder of VP Records. On The Black Soul Music Experience Podcast,i start off with my new guest Miss Miyuki Tani representing Japan. She’s a drummer who plays different genres of music:blues, rock & roll,r&b,hip-hop,pop,country and EDM.I had a wonderful time interviewing her,and i got a chance to say hello in Japanese which is Konnichiwa.Who were her favorites in black music:Muddy Waters,D’Angelo,Donny Hathaway,Lenny Kravitz,Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson. Before i forget, here’s another FYI:The first Asian group that performed on Soul Train was The Yellow Light Orchestra. That’s the group who did the instrumental tune called “Computer Game”.Released back in the summer of 1980. As you know,Mother’s Day falls on Sunday May 10th,and on every Mother’s Day on The Black Soul Music Experience Podcast,i always celebrate Mother’s Day with a Mother’s Day episode.Since i started doing my podcast,i did “Mother’s Day in Song” back on season 1[2021-2022 season],and it 6 plays on Spotify.I was inspired by my late paternal grandmother Sadie Beatrice Warrick-Wilson who died in her sleep on Saturday April 30th,1983 at the age of 74.She was preparing to go on her church trip that was paid in full, but she wasn’t feeling well,so she called her daughter to get over to the apartment, but it was too late.Granny was buried on Saturday May 7th in Chapel Hill,Md. at Grace United Methodist Church cemetery on a Mother’s Day weekend.I was staying at my patnernal cousins house and they were listening to WPFW FM 89.3,and they were playing Mother’s Day songs. In 1995,i got a second job,and i worked at AM 1460 WVOX in New Rochelle,N.Y. on the SundayAfternoon/Evening shift and from 5:30-9:00pm sign-off,i did Mother’s Day songs on the hour back in 1996 and 1997.Today,my mission continues, and last season,i did bonus episodes. This season,i only have 2 episodes. On Thursday May 7th,my guest is my paternal cousin Richard Bellinger, and i’m going to interview him about his mom who was a background singer for Patti LaBelle,B.B. King and others. On the weekend,my bonus episode will be my new guest Justina Hendricks. She’s a singer/songwriter and rapper who sings genres of black music,& she’s going to talk about her memories of her mom. So please check out my 3 new episodes on The Black Soul Music Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts,& on The Black Soul Music Experience Podcast You Tube channel. You’ll love it,& please pass it on. God bless & please be safe.
